The split seconds chronograph is capable of splitting the seconds hand by halting one seconds hand and letting a second hand continue to advance as a split to time a second event. Let's say you are timing a horse race. You'd start the seconds chronograph at the start of the race. When the first horse completes the lap, you'd split the seconds, halting the first seconds hand to indicate the first horse's time, but leaving the split hand to time the second horse.
